Key points on HR Policy

The context for HR practices must be closely entrenched in the values and the culture of the organisation

In the NGO context HR practices comprise the following elements

-    Honing the existing /new human resources to achieve the vision. Vision building in all employees is key to achieving a sound HR system in the organisation

-    Identifying individuals who are willing to “move mountains for peanuts”

Key points on "DOs and DONTs of fundraising" facilitated by Mr Abhijit, Board member at APD and until recently Marketing Director of the organisation and Mr Gopinath, CEO of APD.

If you have a fundraiser in the organisation, then make sure that s/he has the following attributes

  1. Asking without hesitation and asking everyone
  2. Asking passionately - ask like you BELIEVE why and how the donor's money will change a life
  3. Story telling ability - people LOVE to hear happy stories of change more than the problem statement- while its important to draw attention to the cause, always ensure that you share hope and optimism for change.

Key points on "Acquiring, Engaging and Retaining donors" facilitated by Mr Anoj Viswanathan Co-Founder at Milaap.

The session was focused on individual giving and not institutional or CSR giving

Telling the story

  1. Know the difference between information and communication - information is just facts - communication is story telling. Both are important but to get someone interested in what you are doing its the story
  2. Donors give to a) stories- about individuals b) people - they do not give to "causes" c ) brands - organisations that they are "visible" to them.
  3. What is a "story" ? Its a simple non technical, non jargonised description of someone's life , an incident, an instance- the key is keeping it really simple - a young child should be able to understand - for e.g Rupa has an illness and she cant walk because of the same.

Key points on "What do corporates look for when they give out money"

Key points of discussion

The NGO space is crowded  with the good, bad and the ugly- organisations that are serious about what their mission, the fly by night and the ones that are set up for everything else but bringing about change :-) In this chaotic context, you need to be heard. "Marketing" your cause simply means being heard by people who dont know you and want to hear more about you. And as a result want to get associated and be part of the story.

The basis to market your cause/organisation

  1. Organisations are started by an individual's passion, investment of time and effort. The assumption that others will share the same passion and support you unconditionally is incorrect. Reflect upon if you would do the same.

Key points on "How  CSOs can use public accountability tools  and mechanisms to raise  support for their work"

Key points of discussion

What is the meaning of public accountability?

Simply put being accountable means the willingness and the supporting actions to be answerable for the work that is being done by an organization and everything that makes the same happen

Why is there are greater emphasis on CSOs and accountability?

  1. The truth is that CSOs in India suffer from a negative perception. This comes from real examples of organisations that have been dishonest as well media hype arpund the same.

You can do an event to raise money for yourself: No matter how large or small your organisation is -

 What is an event?

  1. Many of us think of events to mean   performances, logistics planning, ticket sales etc. While these are certainly events, its not just these that can be included as events for fundraising
  2. Basically ANY activity  , big or small, online or offline, that gets people to give your cause money can be defined an event.

When must one start thinking about events?

  1. Starting to think about events to fundraise can be as immediate as the start of your organisation.
  2. However, the FIRST  critical element is to be SURE about what you want to do through your organsiation. Whose lives do you want to change and why. There can be NO confusion in your mind about this.                                                                     Read More
